The rampage started in the immigrant neighborhood of La Gabelle, just as there were similar arsons and lootings in recent days in Toulon, i.e. in a larger French city.

In France, it is common for young people to run afoul of a suburb one night, setting fires, overturning cars, and breaking shop windows. But what happened in La Gabelle on Sunday morning is also unusual there. Due to the curfew, the police wanted to have a gang identified around 11:00 in the evening, because they were on the street and shouting. The young people did not give their papers, instead they attacked the police, in no time there were 70-80 of them around the police, they overturned the police car, and the police fled. Then the youths started to destroy the whole city until three in the morning.

Davido Reverdy, the union secretary of the so-called rural affairs unit of the French police, told BFM TV that this is not La Gabelle, this is France itself,

here we are not talking about riots, but about urban guerrillas,

and that 70-80 young men practically burned and looted a small French town. Le Figaro wrote about how the police officer called the rampaging youths a horde.

Because the shops were broken into, set on fire, and looted. A total of 17 shops were attacked. Lots of cars were set on fire.

Davido Reverdy also spoke about how he thought the commandos should also have helped the gendarmes and the police. Three police officers were injured.

Not a single looter or arsonist could be arrested.
