The scandal erupted after commentators viewed a non-binary Olympian as a woman
He should have known, because the personal pronouns he used were even written on his skateboard. The progressive part of the Internet is tearing apart the commentators who kept using the wrong gender personal pronoun when talking about the American skateboarder Alana Smith.
Alana Smith is the first openly non-binary athlete to compete in the Olympics.
The BBC commentator viewed Smith as a woman and consistently used the personal pronoun "she" for her. And not only British television made this mistake, but also American NBC Sports.
Since in the English language different personal pronouns are associated with the genders (male: he/ő, female: she/ő), the vanguards of the progression want to transform the grammar as well. Therefore, in gender circles, non-binary, queer and individuals who define themselves as other genders have recently started using the personal pronoun they/them (in Hungarian).
The outraged crowd does not understand how this could happen, since Alana Smith's skateboard was also written on how to refer to her.
On Twitter, a veritable tsunami of hate fell on the errant commentators.
This is journalistic negligence. No one should use the wrong gender at such an international event. Sports can't deal with non-binary athletes," wrote transgender journalist Britni de la Cretaz.
