In Bratislava, the parliament accepted the proposal to amend the law, according to which there is a clear possibility to post road signs in Hungarian. The regulations regarding the naming of parts of the settlements are also changing, it will be possible to put up signs with their Hungarian names. - writes the New word.

According to this, from the first of January, there will be a clear and unambiguous opportunity to display essentially all traffic signs in the language of the given minority in settlements inhabited by nationalities. The list of settlements inhabited by nationalities is determined based on the census, and includes towns and villages with at least 15-20 percent minority population. In the case of most traffic signs, displaying their minority language versions is still listed as an option in the law, not as an obligation.

The amendment to the law means that, for example, in Hungarian-inhabited settlements, all "destination" signs indicate the cities, villages, etc. its name can also be displayed in Hungarian, but this category also includes signs indicating the names of rivers and tourist destinations. This means that, for example, in Komárom, traffic signs can not only display the name of the nearby settlement, which is also inhabited by Hungarians, say the Hungarian name of Érsekújvár, but also its Hungarian name: "Pozsony" can appear on signs pointing in the direction of the capital.

The legislative amendment also applies to signs warning of danger and containing inscriptions. The amended law now clearly and unambiguously stipulates that in settlements inhabited by minorities, these signs must also be posted in the language of the given nationality. Until now, the regulation was also confusing in this regard, in practice, the legal standard that required inscriptions in minority languages was not applied to traffic signs. However, this will change from the first of January, the legislation is now clear, so in settlements inhabited by Hungarians, for example, "Pozor, deti!" "Caution, children!" should appear next to the sign as a caption as well. In the event of failure to do so, the government office responsible for monitoring the regulations may impose a fine ranging from 50 to 2,500 euros. This category also includes, for example, "Sliding road", "Railway crossing without barriers", etc.
