In recent days, the number of illegal border crossers has exceeded one hundred thousand. This year, the Hungarian authorities have arrested more than 97,000 illegal migrants, compared to only 42,000 so far last year. This means that illegal migration could double this year compared to last year's figure, even though last year's figure was two and a half times that of the year before, writes Bence Rétvári, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, on his social media page.

"While the whole of Europe is focused on the war in Ukraine and countries are trying to deal with the consequences of the economic crisis caused by the war, the threat of illegal migration has not passed at all.

Moreover, in the second half of the year, due to the energy crisis and food price increases, an even greater acceleration than this growth rate is expected. This means that the protection of the southern border must be further strengthened in autumn. And now is the time for Brussels to take a meaningful share of the costs of protecting the EU's external borders and not to use its energy to put forward the quota proposals again." - writes Bence Rétvári in his post.
