The payment of the wedding dress, rings, celebratory lunch and photographs is also supported by the right-wing ruling party League, which submitted a bill to support church weddings only.

They want to help couples who want to get married with an amount equivalent to twenty thousand euros, or eight million forints. The only condition is that they say yes in church. Those whose annual gross income does not exceed 23,000 euros could benefit from the support, and the condition is also set that newlyweds must have held Italian citizenship for at least ten years.

The Matteo Salvini submitted the same proposal to the parliament in April 2019, but it was not accepted due to the 2019 government crisis. Now, as a member of the governing right-wing coalition, the League can count on a secure parliamentary majority.

According to the party's previous announcement, the initiative aims to increase the number of marriages and church weddings.

According to the latest data from the Istat statistical office, slightly more than 184,000 marriages took place in 2019, six percent less than a year earlier. The rate of church weddings was 47.4 percent, while in 1990, more than 82 percent of weddings were still in churches.
