From a political point of view, it is important for the European Parliament to keep discussions about Hungary on the agenda, but that is just self-judgment. The members of the EP are not actually legislators, so the body does not have any authority in the conditionality procedure vis-à-vis our country - he pointed out in M1's program Ma reglegg, Jr. Zoltán Lomnici is a constitutional lawyer.

Once again, Hungary was on the agenda of the European Parliament (EP), the representatives discussed the negotiations between our country and the European Commission in Strasbourg. The matter will be voted on Thursday.

The draft resolution calls on the Commission not to recommend the termination of the conditionality procedure against Hungary and not to allow the payment of EU funds, because they do not consider Hungarian anti-corruption measures to be sufficient.

Regarding the topic, jr. Constitutional lawyer Zoltán Lomnici was a guest of Ma regleg, who pointed out that this is the third event in a short period of time, and the 11th in the cycle, when the EP is discussing issues related to Hungary.

According to Századvég's legal expert , it is no coincidence that even though there are many important topics from the pandemic to the Russian-Ukrainian war, our country is being dealt with in Strasbourg.

"From a political point of view, it is important for the EP to keep the issue on the agenda, and this is also a waste of time," he said, adding that the EP is trying to put psychological and moral pressure on the European Commission by delaying the procedure, using false information and blatant untruths.

"This circus of the European Parliament is political self-judgment, which tries to buy time and tries to force the Commission to make a mistake even at the last second," underlined Lomnici Jr.

He emphasized: the Hungarian government made 17 commitments, which have already been included in legislation one by one.

The EP's problem with the commitments is that the newly created anti-corruption institutions are not yet operational. However, according to the constitutional lawyer, this is a rather unprofessional accusation from the EU representatives, since the institutions in question - for example the Integrity Authority - only started operating a few days ago.

He stated, however, that no matter how much the EP tries to exert pressure on the public, it does not actually have any authority regarding the conditionality procedure.

"They consider that they have a say in this matter, even though the members of the EP are not legislators," the expert stated, adding that when the body makes a decision, no legislation is actually taking place. Zoltán Lomnici Jr. believed that the further accusations would hopefully not slow down the withdrawal of EU funds due to our country.
