An agreement has been reached, as a result of which preparatory investments can soon begin in order for Hungarian companies to be able to use the Hungarian-owned part of the port of Trieste for their export activities from 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Rome on Wednesday.

According to the ministry's statement, the head of the ministry reported after his consultation with Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini that the government's goal with the land purchased in the port of Trieste is to enable Hungarian companies to access the sea exit as quickly and smoothly as possible.

He said

presented the development concept to be implemented, based on which a port capable of handling 2.5 million tons per year and receiving both road and rail transports will be created.

He added that an agreement of 45 million euros has been reached, so preparatory investments can begin soon so that Hungarian companies can also use the Hungarian-owned part of the port for their export activities from 2026.

With the joint development program, the two countries want to make Trieste one of the most important ports in Central Europe, he stated.

Péter Szijjártó praised Matteo Salvini, saying " fortunately, there are still politicians in leading positions in Europe who can think about migration in a sane way ".

He stated that

the former interior minister " experienced the consequences of prioritizing the protection of one's own country and the security of Europe over liberal hypocrisy ".

He pointed out that Salvini, like the Hungarian government, clearly sees the security risks of immigration and is brave enough to speak out against it.

" It is important that the voices against illegal migration come together, be as loud as possible, in order to force Brussels to finally stop supporting migration, " he warned.

The minister underlined that Hungary is under double pressure: refugees are constantly arriving from Ukraine, while illegal immigrants are under siege at the southern border, where the authorities have already prevented 255,000 crossing attempts this year.

He reminded that more than 1,500 people smugglers are being prosecuted, some of whom attacked Hungarian police officers with firearms.

" The aggression has reached a new level, so now is the time for Brussels to realize that its policy supporting migration is in serious danger, human lives are now at risk, " he emphasized.

Migration should be stopped, not managed. However, if Brussels is not willing to change its policy supporting migration, then unfortunately we can expect even more pressure on our southern border than before and even more serious data than the figures of 2015

he added.

He said that Italy is one of the world's largest developed economies, so cooperation can help Hungary a lot in avoiding recession.

According to his information, Italian companies make up the ninth largest investor community in our country, Italy is the fourth largest foreign trade partner, bilateral trade reached a peak of 12 billion euros last year, and this year can be counted on to grow by 20-25 percent.

On Wednesday, Péter Szijjártó will also meet the Minister of Economic Development and Energy, then the head of the World Food Program (WFP), and the president of the Italian Space Agency, with whom they will sign a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in peaceful space activities.
