The suspects of the Brussels corruption scandal must remain in prison, it was revealed today .

According to the court's decision on Friday, Eva Kaili, the former vice-president of the European Parliament (EP), must remain in custody for at least another two months, and Marc Tarabella, a Belgian MEP representative, for one month.

On Tuesday, the lawyers defending socialist politicians requested the release of their clients accused of corruption, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization.

Marc Tarabella's immunity was suspended on February 2, and the prosecutor's office indicted him ten days later and placed him in pretrial detention. Eva Kaili was arrested when the bribery case broke out, on December 9, after the Belgian police found 150,000 euros in cash in her apartment.

In addition to Eva Kaili, Italian ex-Socialist MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri - who is the suspected leader of the bribery network, the head of the Brussels-based NGO Fight Impunity - and the Italian Francesco Giorgi, Eva Kaili's partner, who is a Belgian Socialist MEP, were arrested in December , worked as Marie Arena's assistant and Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, director of the NGO No Peace Without Justice, who was released from prison in mid-February.
