No more hormone therapy, no medical intervention, no medical opinion, no lengthy paperwork...

As of January 1, 2022, a medical or other certificate of any kind will no longer be required for anyone who, as a transgender, wants to officially change their gender, as well as their name, can do so without any problems at the Swiss registry offices.

On January 1, after Ireland, Belgium, Portugal and Norway, Switzerland will join the European countries where citizens have been given the green light to change gender. In addition, those involved can do this without any hormone therapy, medical intervention, medical expert opinion, and lengthy paperwork, Reuters .

According to the new legislation included in the Swiss Civil Code, from the beginning of next year, anyone who is over 16 years old and is not under guardianship, i.e. a person capable of acting independently, can change their gender and at the same time their name in Swiss government offices based on a simple self-declaration.

TRANSGENDER PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 16 HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THIS AT THIS LEVEL, THEY NEED THE CONSENT OF THE OFFICIAL GUARDIAN FOR THE PROCEDURE.

In the field of gender reassignment, there has been no uniform regulation in Switzerland until now, and in the majority of cantons, a medical certificate was previously required for transgender people. There were cases where, for example, it was also necessary to prove that the person was undergoing hormone treatment and that the gender reassignment surgery had already taken place.

In September, Switzerland was the last of the Western European countries to give the green light to gay marriage and allowed same-sex couples to adopt children.
